Paulo Vinhas

Golf Strength & Conditioning Coach

Paulo is a fully qualified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with an honours qualification in Sport Science. He began his career at the High Performance Centre in 2009 whilst completing his honours degree at the University of Pretoria, he is also working towards qualifying as a CSCS (Certified strength & conditioning specialist) through the NSCA (National strenght & conditioning association) in america and continuesly works to increase his working knowledge of strength & conditioning.
Paulo focuses mainly on Golf strength and conditioning and has assisted professional golfers  on the Sunshine Tour. He is the strength & conditioning coach for the Tuks Golf Academy and is an avid golfer himself, playing off a handicap of +1. He also pursues an amateur golf career, playing in National tournaments, when he is not helping other golfers get into peak physical condition.

 

 Nicola Macleod

Strength trainer and Biokineticist

Nicola began working with the South-african Rowing team in August of 2005, during her Honours year at the University of Pretoria. She is currently involved in the gym based strength training and as the biokineticist. Over the last six years she have been given the opportunity to travel both locally and abroad with the team, in the role of team support and assisting when needed with team management duties, this experience has give her a great understanding with regards to the needs of the athletes, coaches and the sport as a whole. She is currently assisting 3 schools in the strength development of their rowing athletes.

Nicola has 3 biokinetic practises in the Pretoria area and is registered with the Health professiona council of South-Africa, these practises involve biokinetic assessments, evaulations, rehabilitation exercise programmes, sport specific programmes and sports and therapeutic massage as well as corporate health and wellness.

Twice a year she presents a course in Sports Massage for a variety of people interrested

 Devlin Eyden

 

Sport Scientist/ Strength and Conditioning Specialist/ Bike Fitment Technician

 Devlin has been working as a Sport Scientist and Strength & Conditioning specialist since 2010. Prior to this, he completed his Honours degree in Sport Science at the University of Pretoria.

That being said he currently works with numerous high performance academy athletes. Devlin has trained South African top ranked squash players to compete at the World Championship. He trains the HPC swimming, tennis and squash academies. As a sport scientist, a large focus of his job is physiological testing on individuals from an array of sports and sporting backgrounds. Devlin has worked with several cyclist in preparation for events such as ABSA Cape Epic.

Currently he is a Sport Scientist at the Institute for Sport Research based at the High performance centre at the University of Pretoria. Devlin is also a qualified Bike Fitment technician focusing on bicycle set-ups with emphasis on injury prevention and maximum efficiency on the bike.

 Hannah Oguz

Sport Scientist

 Hannah is from the UK and has been working in Sport and Exercise arena since 2000, from the areas of strength and conditioning, fitness training and sport science field and laboratory testing. Hannah has completed her Masters in Exercise Physiology at the University of Loughborough, UK., before which she completed her BSc in Sport and Exercise Science with 1ST class honours at the University of Ulster. Hannah has gained many qualifications and coaching awards over this period, namely her fitness instructors’ award, coaching qualifications in various sports, as well as her ASCA level 1 accreditation during her year spent working at Sydney Academy of Sport in Australia, where she worked with namely the Wallabies, Manly Sea Eagles RL, Australian Winter Olympic athletes as well having hands on experience with the British athletic Olympic athletes in their annual camp at the academy. Hannah has also worked as an exercise physiologist for British triathlon in the UK providing support and researching overtraining and monitoring training loads, before joining us at the University of Pretoria, where she provides sports science support in terms of testing and strength and conditioning to many sports namely Cricket and Table Tennis, and is now currently working very closely with SA Cricket at developmental and professional levels.

 Shona Hendricks

Sport Scientist/Strength and Conditioning Coach

 Shona is a qualified sport scientist and strength and conditioning specialist currently completing her Master’s degree in Sport Science (MSc Med Sport Science). She has also completed the Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist course in October 2008. Shona began her career at the Institute for Sports Research at the High Performance Centre during her honours degree in Sport Science, where she is now the lead strength and conditioning specialist for the SAFA/LOTTO Basetsana U20/U17 National Ladies Football Academy based at the HPC.

Shona’s passion and expertise lies in football S&C and physical testing for both men’s and women’s football teams. She has been the physical trainer for National Women’s Football teams (U17s, U20s and Banyana Banyana) and has also worked with PSL teams such as Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns on consultation basis.

     Kirsty Querl

 Kirsty began working for the Institute for Sports Research at the High Performance Center in 2008 as an intern; while she was completing her Honours Degree in Sport Science from the University of Pretoria. She is also currently completing her Masters degree in Human Movement Science, on Injury prevalence and prevention in Adolescent Tennis Players. She is also a Bronze certified XLR8 speed and agility trainer.

She is the strength and conditioning specialist for the International Tennis Federation (ITF) academy, she has also consulted for SA Ladies and Youth Hockey Squads 2009-2010 and also advises National Lawn Bowls. Her responsibilities are physical testing and assessment of athletes, prehabilitation, programme prescription and strength and conditioning with teams and individuals.  She has experience working with the top ranked junior tennis players in Africa with their highest ranked player being 26 in the world U18 girls. She has presented at the ITF Southern African  Coaches Conference and has travelled with the ITF players to tournaments in Southern Africa as part of the support staff. She has also had the pleasure of learning from former top ranked players such as Mary Pierce and Cara Black while they visited the ITF Center in 2011.

Kirsty presented at the ITF World Wide Coaches Conference, in November 2011 in Port Ghalib, Egypt, and has also gained valuable tennis specific knowledge through an opportunity to visit and learn from the Swiss Tennis Federation in February 2012. She has had the privilege of having Beni Linder, a leader in world tennis Strength and Conditioning as a mentor during this visit.
 

Wayne Coldman 

Strength & Conditioning coach

Wayne has had the luxury of going to the finest educational institutions in South Africa. He recieved his high school training at Grey College Bloemfontein where he was first introduced to competition and the competitive nature of sport. He learnt from the cut throat enviroment and managed to represent his country while at school. He then studied at Stellenbosch university and recieved his degree in B.A Sport Science. After spending 2 years in London playing hockey and working for Fitness First as a branch manager, he returned to South Africa and was given an oppourtunity at the High Performance Center. This opened many doors and since 2007, he has been involved in training the SA boxing team, German Swimming and many more. His focus has moved to helping Tuks sports more and more and is currently working with Tuks Squash, Tennis, Netball, Swimming and Hockey.

Wayne has developed into a trainer that specialises in movement quality and injury prevention. He also currently working on several research topics
